BACKGROUND:
As with the trousers I have had the opportunity to inspect several original relic 14th Brooklyn enlisted men's Chasseur pattern tunics. And as with the trousers I took the opportunity to draft a pattern from those original relic tunics as well as make numerous notes concerning all the small details incorporated in them. It was interesting to note that there were some minor detail differences in them but overall the same cut, style and basic features. The pattern I use today is that very same pattern I drafted then.
In giving a thumbnail sketch on this page (more detailed technical reading is found here on the Company C website), the original 14th NYSM tunics inspected were made of either a lightweight MEDIUM dark blue wool flannel (like a sack coat flannel) or a finer grade wool broadcloth. The two tunics made from broadcloth were evidently privately tailored/privately purchased items whereas the ones made from wool flannel were the regular issue tunics. All these tunics were fully lined in unbleached cotton drill (approximately 8 oz. drill) with muslin in the sleeves and a burlap-like fabric for the waistband lining. There was one small internal pocket and the false vest as well as cuff and skirt flashings were made in a madder red (like a brick red) wool. I have seen button count vary on some of the 14th Brooklyn tunics) both what I have seen in hand and in photographs. However, the most common count per jacket is 56 - 14 on the vest, 14 on either side of the breast and the remaining 14 distributed among the four flashings.
FAST FORWARD
Today, I manufacture the ISSUE style 14th Brooklyn tunic using the medium dark blue wool flannel. Here again, this was the fabric most commonly used on the 14th tunics. I make these tunics in one grade only, “MUSEUM GRADE”. There are sources out there where jacket with a more economical turn and price can be found so no need for me to do the same thing. So I am offering a top of the line replica of the 14th tunic and reflects MANY hours of work (particularly hand finishing) in them. As a result of this accuracy and time spent to achieve it the price will reflect it.
Here's a general construction overview of my 14th NYSM tunics. My reproduction 14th Brooklyn tunics are machine-sewn on the main seams (as per originals) but reflect the very extensive amount of hand sewing found in the originals. I use a lightweight medium shade dark blue 100% wool flannel for the body and MADDER red (not scarlet) wool for the vest pieces and trim flashings. The body panels are lined in an 8 oz unbleached cotton drill and the sleeves are lined in a lightweight unbleached muslin. The waistband is faced in a natural colored burlap-like fabric. ALL seams are exposed as per original tunics and those in the body are entirely hand felled. The collar is faced in RED LEATHER with the leather pieces hand felled. A number of original relic tunics inspected possessed an inspector’s stamp from the New York Depot ("JOS. JONES, N.Y." ) and this stamp is replicated in my tunics. uttons are small domed brass with the vest and breast panel buttons LACED on using a thin cotton twill tape and the flashing buttons are sewn on (although I did see a tunic where these flashing buttons were laced on as well). Both the collar and the waistband feature black steel hooks & eye. Button holes in the vest are all hand sewn.
So as you can see these tunics are the top of the line as the name implys - "Museum Grade". These tunics run -
