MEXICAN WAR 1839 PATTERN WHEEL CAP. On Temporary Hold   #SH1839. Made from a dark blue wool flannel this 1839 pattern wheel cap measures in as a size 7 1/4" (measures 22 3/4” around the inside). This hat has been well used and has some repairs to the lining crown, the muslin lining is moderately soiled, there is some fade on the wool directly behind the chin strap (from sweat) and on the top of the hat (the crown) are two small moth holes. See photos for all this. However, all this aside, this cap is still in solid serviceable condition. Has a black crescent cut leather visor and black two-piece chin strap. Side buttons are stamped brass U.S. general service eagles. The top of the hat is lightly padded. Also present is the neck nape that folds and buttons up when not in used and when lowered for protection in bad weather ties under the chin. No sweatband (probably by original design?). Believed to be a Jarnagin product. Came to us with a Mexican War wooden canteen and Mexican War era knapsack (soft pack). These items are listed separately further below under “ACCOUTREMENTS & EQUIPMENT”.

TWO CAPS: BLUE & GRAY. #SH6165. Here are two sutler row caps, one is a U.S. forage cap and the second is a C.S. kepi. These have been worn but remain in overall very good condition. The U.S. cap is a size 7 1/4 (measures 22 3/4“ around the sweatband) and the C.S. cap is a size 6 7/8 to 7 (measures 22 1/8“ around the sweatband). Both have the usual muslin linings - a couple tiny stains or marks on each lining but not a big thing - and both have machine sewn sweatbands. The U.S. FORAGE CAP comes with an infantry horn attached and the front and back of this cap has been tacked down near the crown with a couple stitches (very easily removed). This was probably done to keep the height down a little. Chin strap w/ buckle plus U.S. eagle side buttons are in place. The C.S. KEPI has a gray body w/ a dark blue sideband. This cap has no brass attached. The plain chin strap plus “CSA” side buttons are in place. Order by color (blue or gray).

SHIRTS

DOMET FLANNEL ISSUE SHIRT. Sale Pending   #JF7902. Privately made ENTIRELY HAND SEWN domet flannel shirt fits an individual with up to a 44” chest. Has been used and has a few small light stains on the body but very minor stuff. There are some tiny dark marks or spots located at various points on this shirt. We’re not entirely sure what they are. Could be part of the fabric weave or soiling of some type. Just to mention it we have these same marks on another domet flannel shirt here on site (from the same maker) so it might indeed be something in the weave. We took a photo of one of these marks and noted it accordingly for your review. These do not affect the shirt though and are fairly small.

Meantime, this shirt features a falling pattern collar w/ one small paperbacked tin button for closing. No front plaquet. One small paperbacked tin button on each cuff. There are two small black stamps on the back of the shirt but we cannot make out what they say. We have a photo of one of them in the photo line-up. We have another shirt like this from the same maker where the stamps are visible. So we believe these stamps are the same as on the other domet shirt - “U.S. Inspector James Williams, N.Y. ” and maker “A.S. Saroni, New York”. Here again though, the stamps on this shirt are not legible but we are pretty sure they are the same as on the other domet shirt. Overall a very nice shirt and ready to go back into service.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this shirt will fit you satisfactorily on all points. SLEEVE: 36” (as measured from the center of the back of the neck, over the shoulder and down to the bottom edge of the cuff)
FRONT LENGTH: 31” (base of neck to the bottom of the front hem)
BACK LENGTH: 34 1/2” (base of collar to bottom of the rear hem)

DOMET FLANNEL ISSUE SHIRT. #JF2242. Privately made ENTIRELY HAND SEWN domet flannel shirt fits an individual with up to a 40” chest. Has been used and has a few small light stains on the upper left side & upper left arm and a very tiny one on the right shoulder. Not a big thing at all though and does not affect the wearability (did I just create a word? :-) of this shirt. Some small hand repairs on each side seam split - 4” long on the left and 1 1/2” long on the right. Solid work so no problems there. No other issues with this shirt. Falling pattern collar w/ one small paperbacked tin button for closing. No front plaquet. One small paperbacked tin button on each cuff. Stamped on the back with an inspectors stamp “U.S. Inspector James Williams, N.Y.” and a makers stamp “A.S. Saroni, New York”. These stamps are rather small in size. Nonetheless, this shirt remains in GREAT condition all round and as mentioned it was laundered before being stored. CANTON FLANNEL DRAWERS & UNDERSHIRT SET. #SH6624. Here we have a small sized Canton flannel drawers and undershirt which have been worn but remain in great condition. NO rips, tears, repairs, etc. Both the drawers and undershirt are entirely machine sewn and we believe these to be C & D Jarnagin products. Here’s the breakdown per item:

DRAWERS: Measures in at 31” waist x 27 1/2” length. The waist can be let out up to 3” more easy and with an even longer tie-back cord probably another good inch. The length is designed to go to the ankle and not necessarily match your trouser length. These drawers are in excellent physical condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc) but do have a large stain on the right knee. But that’s it - no other problems with these drawers. Featured is a pleated waist w/ a two button waistband closure (buttons are synthetic bone) with a cotton tie cord in the split rear waistband. The cuffs have a drawstring but are not split. The inside raw seams have machine serged edges to prevent fraying. The owners name is printed in magic marker on the inside right rear waistband.

UNDERSHIRT: Fits individual with up to a 40“ chest. Like the drawers this undershirt is in great physical condition but does have some assorted small light stains or marks here and there and a little yellowing around the inside of the collar. Some of the marks on the body could be from living in the knapsack for a while. I’m pretty sure the dry cleaner can get most of these out. Four synthetic bone buttons down the front - the top one is exposed but the remaining three buttons are hidden under a flap or cover. Plain cuffs, no side seam splits and no underarm gussets. The underside of the collar is made from osnaburg. The owners name is printed in magic marker on the inside near the bottom edge. Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this undershirt will fit you on all points:

COLLAR: 19” (not counting the 1” gap between collar ends)

C.S. BROWN LEATHER CAVALRY SWORD BELT RIG. #SH7736 . This set has been to the field and has its share of dings and scrapes but remains in overall very solid serviceable condition. This rig has been in storage a while so all the pieces could use a cleaning/oiling plus most of the brass rivets have some verdigris on them (copper carbonate - that soft green crusting that forms on copper and brass over time). This can be cleaned off with steel wool or rubbed with a cloth that has been dipped in a mixture of hot vinegar then dabbed in a little salt before rubbing.

The set consists of a 43” adjustable sword belt w/ a cast brass tongue & groove star buckle by Hanover Brass, a holster for a .36 caliber revolver, a "CS" embossed pistol box, one "CS" embossed cap box w/ wool fleece & cone pick plus one plain (non-embossed) carbine cartridge box w/ tin plus pewter finial. Comes complete w/ a Sam Browne ("over-the-shoulder") belt plus saber hangers (no brass clips). Privately made. We’ve supplied 24 photos of this rig. Please check them all out closely to get the best idea of condition.

We've had some gentlemen e-mail us about the plate and yes, it is on upside down. However, the seller had it installed this way to give the star an angled appearance.

MILITIA PATTERN KNAPSACK. #JF8829. Wooden framed militia pattern knapsack (hardpack) w/ a two compartment main box plus “V” bag compartment on the inside back of the cover flap. The “V” bag ties closed via two cotton tape ties. The pack has a gloss black cotton drill cover over the wooden frame and the “V” bag (w/ cover flap) is also made from painted cotton drill. All main black leather harness plus the three leather closing straps on the back cover are in great condition. All rivets, roller buckles and brass hardware are likewise in great shape. Present but not currently attached are the two blanket roll straps plus a pair of rifleman’s waist belt attachments (which the two front “J” hooks attach to of course). Painted in white on the back cover is “5th N.H.V. and A 33”. This is easily painted over if needed. This pack measures in at 16” wide x 12” tall x 5” wide. Has a couple very minor rubs on the paint here and there but remains in excellent++ condition. Evidently, this pack has seen VERY little service. Made by ACW Knapsacks.

Given the size and weight of this pack we will ship it via U.S. Postal Service “Retail Ground” to keep the shipping fee as low as possible.

U.S. SOFTPACK w/ WOODEN FRAME: #BC2765. This C & D Jarnagin made 1853/1855 U.S. double bag knapsack has been to the field and has some scattered light surface wear to the painted finish. The corners seem to have the most of it (see photo) but these corners can be easily touched up with a little flat black paint. Other than that this pack is in very solid condition all around, all the hardware is present and in great shape and all stitches are tight on both the bag as well as on all the leather pieces. Accompanying this bag is a tongue-and-groove wooden frame which was carefully disassembled by the owner when he sent the pack in. The small brass nails are still present in the wood so this frame should be able to be reassembled without any problems. There was a wooden stick accompanying the frame pieces. This stick goes in the straps on top of the pack when there is a blanket roll or greatcoat rolled and strapped on top. It helps the roll to stay in place and ride correctly. This stick will of course accompany the pack and the new owner can decide if he want to use it or not.

C.S. SINGLE BAG (“KIBLER”) KNAPSACK.#BC2808. Well used but still solid and serviceable. Has its share of rubs and paint loss (especially on the corners as would be expected) but there are no rips, tears, repairs on the fabric or loose stitches, The leather pieces are a little dry and would benefit from a light coating of some leather preservative or oil. Now we need to mention that one of the front cross straps is missing. The brass "Chicago screw" type retainer is present but the leather strap itself is missing. Also, one of the small inner bag leather tabs has the end piece missing. Please see photo set #3 for this. Meantime, there is a blue striped cotton ticking compartment divider that has some light stains on it but certainly no problems beyond that. All the buckles and brass hardware are in great shape. CARTRIDGE BOX w/ SLING. #BC2827. Made by C & D Jarnagin this black leather .58 caliber box has seen service but remains in solid serviceable condition. A little cleaning should step it up a bit. No plates and never had any. Comes with shoulder belt (sling) and has a set of tins. The tins are pretty tight in the box which is why we could not pull ’em out for a full photo. This box is stamped on the lower front corner “J R MYERS, US ORD DEPT INSPECTOR”. This may (??) have been added at some point in the boxs travels as we did not find this particular stamp among those used by C & D. A nice touch nonetheless. Accompanying this cartridge box is a well used but solid and intact black leather cap box. This cap box is NOT a Jarnagin product and probably from sutler row.

ENFIELD CARTRIDGE BOX BELT ("SLING"): #BC8873. White leather sling measuring in at 2 3/4” wide x 68 1/2” long tip to tip. Lightly used but the main body remains in overall nice shape. Both bales though (the ends or tips that go into the box buckles to adjust length) have been re-cut - most likely in an effort to shorten the sling length a little. This work was done by someone at home some point and is a little rough; still works but just a little rough looking (see photos when posted). Please measure the rear sling retainer tabs on your box to insure that this sling (at 2 3/4” wide) will slide through.

The roller buckles themselves are dark gray. Finial is brass. Comes with two tins which have some minor dents and some rust … the usual stuff on a well used box. One tin also has a small split on the bottom. The painted canvas cap box has bound edges and a leather pouch and inner cover. The two rear belt loops are riveted leather. Inside the pouch is lambs fleece plus a cone pick. Brass finial and a hand stitched catch or hole on the main cover for closing,

CAVALRY CARBINE BOX. #BC2349 The seller informs us that this 1860 .54 caliber carbine cartridge box was privately made. This box has seen a little service but remains in really nice overall condition. It does have some light scraps on the body and the rear belt loops but nothing all that bad. All the stitching is intact plus the copper rivets have a solid hold on the rear belt loops. Has a brass finial for closing the cover. On the bottom are two steel roller buckles for slinging this box on a shoulder belt (if desired). These buckles are pretty clean (no heavy rust or corrosion) but do have a patina. Inside we have an implement pouch and in the main compartment is a wooden block drilled to hold twenty cartridges. The wooden block is in great condition. No stamps on this box. ASSORTED BAYONET SCABBARDS. #SH2565. On hand are one Enfield pattern, one for a Remington (“zouave”) saber bayonet and two Gaylord (Springfield) pattern bayonet scabbards. These scabbards have been in service a while and show wear and use. Conditions range from very good to pretty well used. Specifics per are given below. One has a couple stitches broken, some have leather with flaking, and all have some degrees of scrapes and rubs common to long field service. These scabbards have been in storage a while and could benefit from a wipe-down with a wet cloth, followed by the application of some leather treatment once dry. Maker’s are unknown. I will have photos posted as soon as possible. Order by letter:

A. REMINGTON ("Zouave") SABER BAYONET SCABBARD: In pretty good overall condition. Some light surface cracking on the 20 3/4” long black leather scabbard but it is still quite solid. Has a brass throat and tip plus a brass lug for attaching the scabbard to the frog. The frog itself has some creasing in the leather and a couple light scratches but all stitching is tight. Total length (tip to tip) counting the frog is 25 1/2”. No stamps or marks. Scabbard and frog are black bridle leather. Maker unknown.

B. ENFIELD PATTERN: This scabbard has seen the severest service in this lot. Still serviceable though. Has a couple broken stitches and some pretty good surface flaking on the leather. A fair amount of scuffs & rubs as well. Brass tip is intact though. The scabbard measures 17 3/4” throat to tip. The frog itself though is in pretty nice condition all round. Has some light scuffs and rubs but nothing severe whatsoever. Has the usual strap & buckle fixture for securing the scabbard. This frog has stitching as well as eleven rivets (copper or brass). The rivets have some verdigris on them (copper carbonate - that soft green crusting that forms on copper and brass over time). This can be cleaned off with steel wool or rubbed with a cloth that has been dipped in a mixture of hot vinegar then dabbed in a little salt before rubbing). The frog is stamped with an oval cartouche with a star in the center but we cannot make out the text. Bridle leather frog and scabbard

C. GAYLORD PATTERN 2-RIVET: Made from bridle leather and in overall solid serviceable condition. The scabbard has some wrinkles and a small crease near the tip. The brass tip is intact. The frog is in very good condition save for some light wrinkles. The two rivets are in place but have verdigris on them. See above scabbard for info on that. No makers marks or stamps. Measures 16 3/4” tip to tip. Maker unknown.

D. GAYLORD PATTERN 7-RIVET: In overall solid serviceable condition. The scabbard has some wrinkles but no major damage. The brass tip is intact. While the scabbard is smooth (bridle) leather the frog is rough-out leather. The seven brass rivets are in place but have verdigris on them. See above scabbards for info on that. The frog has two stamps on the (maker and inspector) but hard to read the print. Measures 19” tip to tip. Contemporary maker unknown.

U.S. -or- C.S. BLACK LEATHER BELT; NO PLATE. #GW3437. This black leather belt measures in at 1 3/4” wide, has a working length of between 34" to 37" depending on the type of waist plate used. THis is a modern belt (meaning not one made specifically as a repro for Civil War reenacting). Still, it’s a wide flat black leather belt and in that regard works just fine. This belt has been service in both a U.S. and well as a C.S. application based on the two styles of adjustment holes present - single row & double row. For U.S. or C.S. OVAL STYLE PLATES this belt – once a plate has been attached – has a maximum (outward) working length of right around 34” based on the SINGLE adjustment holes. For A GEORGIA FRAME style buckle the maximum (outward) working length - once a plate has been attached - is right around 37” using the double row of holes. Need to mention that the two points or tines of the Georgia Frame have to have a 13/16" center-to-center measurement (some GA frames vary slightly on this) to match the holes punched in this belt (which have a 13/16" center-to-center measurement). Finally, there is a leather retainer loop from this belts “modern” service” still present. However, it can be removed if desired.

BUFF SABER BELT w/ CIRCULAR U.S. PLATE. #JM1550. Custom made by Dell’s Leatherworks this 1 5/8” wide Dragoon style buff leather saber belt can be used in an early war CS. impression as well. The plate can be changed of course but that would be the job for someone with leather sewing tools and skills. But as it is with the circular US plate, it can work for US or CS early war.

This saber belt was used a few times then went into storage and has remained there for a while. The brass pieces have a patina from age but should polish up nicely (if you’re so inclined) with a little time spent on the job. This belt measures in with a 49” waist (counting the plate). There is only one hole in the belt for the adjustment hook (given that this belt was custom made and fitted to the current owner). However, more holes can be punched in (by the new owner) for a wide range of adjustment. The sabers hangers are adjustable via brass center bar buckles but there are no snap swivels on the ends (probably came that way by design). There is no “over-the-shoulder” (Sam Browne) strap (again, probably by design).

There are also some light dings / scratches on the tin buckle and metal hardware. However, this belt remains in overall very solid serviceable condition. TWO PAINTED HAVERSACKS: One Used / One Well Used: #SH7625. On hand are two painted cotton haversacks with roller buckle / strap closures. Both have been used with one particularly well used. Here’s the scoop per haversack:

Haversack “A”: In pretty nice condition and retains just about all of its black finish. Comes with an osnaburg inner bag held in place by three black flat steel buttons. Has a 44” long x 1 7/8 wide carrying strap. The bag itself measures approximately 13” wide x 11” tall. The bottom panel of the bag is 3 1/4” wide. Has the owners name printed on the inside the bag. No stamps or marks. Maker unknown

Haversack “B”: Has been very well used, is missing about 50% of its painted finish and has two very tiny holes in the bottom of the bag. There is also a 1 1/4” hand sewn repair on the bag near the button front. We’ll have photos of all this. The carrying strap on this particular haversack has portions on the left and right sides folded and hand sewn in place to shorten the strap. This hand stitching can easily be taken out thus lengthening the strap. Currently the strap measures in at 46” long. I you take out the hand stitching on each side you’ll gain about 4” total overall. The front closing strap is stamped “R. VALENTINE, U.S. INSPECTOR, NY”. Comes with a muslin inner bag but this is not the original inner bag to this haversack - it is smaller. It could be used though as a pattern (with some enlargement of course) to make a new fitted bag for this haversack. The owners is printed on inside the bag. Maker unknown.

WHITE COTTON DUCK HAVERSACK. #BC8724. Made from a white cotton drill this entirely hand sewn haversack has seen service and has some stains and marks on it. However, the bag remains in overall solid serviceable condition. There is a 3/4” bone button on the body and a hand sewn button hole on the cover for closing. The edges of the cover and top edge of the bag are rolled & hand hemmed but the inside bag seams are raw with some edge fraying taking place. No inner bag. The 1/ 1/4” wide cotton drill carrying strap is 43” long and an 8” long portion of that on one end is a homemade addition. This addition can be removed and the end of the original strap resewn to the bag thus shortening the strap to 35” (which was probably its original length). The bag itself measures approximately 12“ wide x 12“ tall. Some of the raw seams inside the bag are fraying a bit and we have a photo showing that. Maker unknown (privately made or sutler row).

SNARE DRUM. #BC5584. Made by the Florance Drum Company of Honesdale, Pennsylvania this drum has been to the field and has some scratches and wear on the shell and hoops. There are also some light dirt marks on the rope elements. With a little care and a small sudsy brush (like an old toothbrush) most of this should clean off. This drum is very solid though and all parts intact. Please check out all the photos closely for the best idea of this drums condition. This drum measures 14 3/4” tall x 13 3/4“ in diameter and features a golden oak shell, red hoops, dark brown ears and a Civil War screw style strainer. It is NOT embellished with any hand-painted motifs nor does it have any tack designs. The head is "Fiberskyn” for better stability in high humidity and bad weather. Take a close look at the photo showing this drum head as it does have some “wrinkles” in it. I’m not a musician so my descriptive terminology for this is way off I’m sure. The bottom clear element has some dings in it but it remains solid and intact. The ropes are synthetic (to also avoid problems during climate change) but are hard to tell from natural fiber one unless examined very closely. There is a small carrying device attached to the side but the drum does NOT come with a sling nor drum sticks (see listing below for STICKS). This item will ship via UPS and be fully insured for the sale price.
