U.S. MOUNTED PATTERN TROUSERS
PATTERN My U.S. mounted trousers are principally the foot pattern trouser with the addition of the mounted seat reinforcement panels. There are some additional small sewing differences on the inside plus small tin buttons added to the inside the cuffs. All of this follows documented historical patterning and references. Without recounting all the foot pattern details on this page, I refer you to PAGE 1 for more information. Concerning the mounted seat reinforcement panels, these are sewn on by machine using a single row of stitching and with the raw edges showing. The raw edges are then flat-felled to the trousers by hand (see photos) using the felling stitch. I have seen several methods of attaching and finished the mounted seat on original relic Federal mounted trousers and have selected this particular method to use on my reproductions. I have seen this felled raw edge method on both Deering as well as Schuylkill Arsenal trousers.
SPECIAL NOTE ON SCHUYLKILL ARSENAL TROUSERS. My repro SA's are made with a mix of both machine as well as hand sewing. All the main seams are done by machine with all the detail and felling work is done by hand. I do have some "at cost" hand top-stitching options available on the order form for those gentlemen who want visible top-stitching done by hand. You will also see an option on the order form for sewing the mounted panels on to the trousers entirely BY HAND. While we usually sew these panels on by machine and then fell the raw edges by hand, this option allows for reinforcement panels to be sewn on BY HAND as well felling the raw edges by hand.
GRADE I make mounted trousers in the "Museum Grade" standard only. I do not make these in the "Commercial Grade" standard.
FABRIC I used the Woolrich 85/15 (%) wool blend fabric as my standard wool. However, I do have an "at cost" option available for 100% wool. This is outlined on the order form
STRIPING: For non-commissioned officers of the CAVALRY I always try to use a golden yellow wool tape for your trouser striping rather than the brighter lemon yellow. The golden yellow tape is sometimes subject to availability but I try to keep some in stock. For non-commissioned officers of the ARTILLERY I use a scarlet wool tape.
PRICE Price for my basic ("basic" meaning made in 85/15 blend wool without any special hand sewing/hand top stitch options) mounted trousers run $175.00 + $9.00 U.S. Priority Mail shipping. Additional fabric and sewing options plus their prices are found on the mounted trouser order form (see below).
