COATS & JACKETS

Coats and jackets are listed in this order: GREATCOATS, FROCKS, SACKS, SHELLS, etc.   U.S. Listings Followed By C.S. Listings

NEW LISTING. DARK BLUE WOOL CAPE. #BC4239. Was at a loss where to list this item at so I put it here! :-). Also, while this wool cape currently has U.S. eagle buttons on it these can very easily be changed out to C.S. or civilian buttons to allow the cape to be used in either of those applications.

Was worn just a couple times and remains in great condition! Made from very nice dark blue wool (could be broadcloth) and fully lined in plain black cotton. The lining has a small silver stamp “JNO. HANDFORD & CO., Brooklyn NY. The cape has a front length of 35 1/2”, a back length of 40” and weighs 3 pounds. I stand 5’ 6” and this cape is a little below knee length on me. Thus, it has a generous length all round for a cape. The falling style collar measures 4". Has five 3/4" U.S. Eagle infantry office "I" buttons on the front w/ hand sewn button holes. As mentioned above the eagle buttons can be changed to any C.S. or civilian button so long as the new buttons are no bigger than 3/4". The size of the button holes will not accommodate any larger sized button. Originally purchased from the Sutler Of Ft. Scott.

C.S. FOOT PATTERN GREATCOAT: #SH1276. Made by C & D Jarnagin this size 42 (see size note below) gray wool C.S. single breasted foot pattern greatcoat has been used but remains in excellent physical condition. Has some light stains here and there along the very bottom edge but that’s about it. A dry cleaning, although not mandatory, would step this coat up a little. Also, this coat has been in storage a while and has a slight musty smell. A dry cleaning would help with this as well.

This coat features a “stand & fall” pattern collar w/ two black steel hooks & eyes, an elbow length cape, two rear adjustment belts w/ retainer loop, roll-back cuffs plus a split faced rear vent. Buttons are stamped brass block “I”s with five 7/8” on the body, two 7/8” on the rear adjustment belts and six smaller 5/8” on the cape. All the buttons have a slight patina to them but are in great physical condition (no dings, dents, etc). Inside we have a gray wool flannel waist length body ining with the sleeves lined in muslin. The owners name, city and state are printed (old style print) on the left sleeve lining at the shoulder. This coat is entirely machine sewn including button holes.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes (especially the SLEEVE LENGTH) to insure that this coat will fit you satisfactorily on all points.

COLLAR:   24” (as measured on the coat)
SHOULDERS:  21” (as measured shoulder-to-shoulder across the back)
SLEEVE (arm) LENGTH:   24” (the cuffs can roll down an inch or two to “adjust” the length a little)
FRONT LENGTH:  40 1/2“ (base of collar to front bottom hem)
BACK LENGTH:   46” (base of collar in the back to rear bottom hem)
ARMPIT-TO-ARMPIT:  26” (not an actual field of measurement in the tailoring world but a lot of guys ask for it)

SIZE NOTE: Some of the front buttons appear to have been moved inward by the previous owner to tighted this coat up a little (we will show this in an upcoming photo). These buttons can be easily moved out again to bring this coat back to a regular sized 42. We can do that for the buyer simply upon request and at NO additional charge.

This coat will ship via Postal Service “Retail Ground” to keep the shipping fee down.

NEW LISTING. C.S. FROCK COAT. #BC9744. Made from blue-gray jean wool and measures in as a 48 TALL (definitely a tall). This coat has been worn but remains in very nice physical condition. The owner used to wear leather suspenders and as a result there are some reddish brown stains on areas of the front and back lining. A dry cleaning may get some of that out. Made with a mix of machine sewing and hand finishing. Has hand quilted breast panels, hand stitching around the arm holes plus some hand stitching on the bottom edge of the inside front facings (where they join the skirt lining at the waistline). In addition to hand sewn button holes this coat is entirely hand stop stitched.

This untrimmed frock features a standing collar, plain cuffs, fully sewn bottom hem, plus two rear external entry tail pockets. The inside front facings have a small piece added to them (left and right) and this was done at the time of assembly. Nine 7/8” U.S. eagle buttons down the front and these are replacements. Also, some of these replacement buttons are very loose and need to be re-stitched to tighten them up. That or just replace them with the C.S. button of your choice. Originally had two buttons on the rear tails (at the upper back) but there are no buttons there now (new ones easily added).

Rounding out this frock coat is a full length gold/black/tan cotton shirting check lining. The same fabric is used to line the sleeves and for the rear tail pockets.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this coat will fit you satisfactorily an ALL points – especially the SLEEVE / ARM LENGTH (29") and the WAIST (44").

C.S. JEAN WOOL JACKET. #IM5091. Fits a size 46 gent BUT it may (?) fit a 48 chest as well so long as the additional measurements below work for you especially the SHOULDER-TO-SHOULDER measurement). No color trimming. Has been worn but well taken care of. The jean wool has faded a little (but evenly) over the years. However, under the sleeves you can still see it’s just a little darker (this area being less exposed to sunlight of course). Freshly dry cleaned prior to being sent in. A couple very small light stains or marks remain on an area along the bottom edge of the body lining, two light stains on the lining near where it joins the collar, and some very light stains on the inside of the cuffs. All of this is very minor to be sure.

Made from a light brown jean cloth (resembles CountyCloth/CRChilds “#8B jeans” but we can’t guarantee that it is) and is lined in both body and sleeves with a natural color osnaburg. No pockets inside or out. Seven large flat pattern pewter “I” buttons down the front w/ one each of the same for the shoulder epaulettes (non-function). No buttons on the cuffs. Entirely hand top stitched on the body, collar, cuffs and on the shoulder epaulettes. Button holes are done by hand. A couple button holes could use some re-stitching on their reverse sides to prevent fraying. The top stitching plus button holes are done in black cotton thread. Rounding out this jacket are two side belt loops (stitched on / non-buttoning). Maker unknown but nice work throughout.

RICHMOND DEPOT TYPE II JACKET. Sale Pending #LB5529. Made by Wambaugh, White & Co. and in size 48 . This jacket has been worn a few times but remains in great physical condition (no rips, tears, repairs or anything of that sort) and was recently dry cleaned. It does have some very light marks around the inside of the collar (so light though that they would not photograph well) and some heavier stains on the sleeve linings at the cuffs (the usual stuff - see photos).

The fabric used to make this jacket is a County Cloth light tan satinette. The jacket has nine 3/4” stamped brass U.S. general service eagle buttons on the front and one of the same on each shoulder epaulette. I do not believe these are the original buttons the coat came with but can easily be replaced (by the buyer) with a button of their choice. This jacket is entirely hand top stitched and is lined in osnaburg in both body and sleeves. C.S. TAN JEAN WOOL JACKET. #BC8711. Here’s an untrimmed size 40 C.S. natural tan colored jean wool jacket which is the seller indicates is a Ben Tart item. Nice sewing work all round. Principally machine sewn but is entirely hand top stitched plus has hand sewn button holes. This jacket has been worn a couple times but has been freshly dry cleaned. However, a number of small light color (grayish) marks are scattered on the outside of the coat - a number on the front but the majority are on the back. Not sure what these are from. Please take a close look at the photos for all this. There are also a couple light marks on the coats lining and we believe these were from the leather suspender ends.

On the front are six 7/8" stamped brass NORTH CAROLINA state seal buttons which can easily be changed out by the buyer. They can also be moved a little closer to the front edge to give this jacket a little more chest and waist room. There are no shoulder epaulettes or side belt loops and the cuffs are plain. Lined in natural colored cotton drill in both the body and sleeves. There are two horizontal cut pockets in the lining - one on the left and one on the right. There is also a jean wool wear strip along the bottom of the lining.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this jacket will fit you satisfactorily on ALL points.

C.S.GRAY WOOL JACKET. #BC3536. Made by Calico Corner this light gray wool roundabout measures in at a size 38. There is a penned “46” on the lining by the collar but this is NOT the size of this coat. We measured it and it is definitely a 38. So we're not sure what the "46" is about. May have been a customer order number (??) but it certainly is not a sizing.

So what we have here is a size 38 medium weight light gray wool roundabout that has been to the field but was dry cleaned before being sent in to us. There are some very light stains on the muslin lining and one darker one on the lining back. Other than that this coat is in very nice condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc.). The coat is principally machine sewn (including button holes) but does have some hand felling around a muslin facing on the inner collar plus around the arm holes. There is a wool wear strip along the bottom of the coat on the inside. Rounding out this coat is a short standing collar, a right side breast pocket in the lining, pointed functioning cuffs (same color as the coat) plus eight 3/4” “CSA” buttons on the front and two of the same on one cuff and one "CSA" and a replacement U.S. eagle on the other cuff. Just to note, if you wish to have the cuffs function (button and unbutton) more easily we would recommend changing the current 3/4” buttons used in the cuffs to smaller 1/2” or 5/8”. The current 3/4” buttons are a little too large to work easily through the holes.

Here are some additional sizes. PLEASE check these against your own measurements to insure this coat will fit you satisfactorily. Please take particular notice of the short sleeve (arm) length.

COLLAR:  18” (not counting the 4” gap between collar ends)

TROUSERS

PLEASE NOTE: The waist measurements on ANY trousers listed on this page are "WAIST AT NAVEL LEVEL" (that high up). This is not necessarily the same waist size found on your blue jean size tags. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WAIST SIZE AT NAVEL LEVEL to insure the trousers you order fit satisfactorily. Three minutes taken to check this measurement may save you all the hassle of reboxing the trousers, the hike to the post office or UPS to ship them back, paying shipping and insurance charges, etc. as well as time lost if you needed the trousers in a hurry.

Now if this measurement stuff gets confusing, no sweat e-mail me and we can sort it all out in short order. :-)

All WAIST measurements on the trousers listed below (or found elsewhere on this site) are all with the rear waistband split TIED CLOSED. :-)

is an in-house Stony Brook Company term for our top-of-the-line trousers in terms of historical accuracy (patterning, assembly, hand sewn details, etc).

ENLISTED MAN'S TROUSERS

SKY BLUE TROUSERS. #AMS3852. On hand are three pair of partially completed Schuylkill Arsenal pattern sky blue wool trousers. These have been started to "Standard Grade" specifications (principally machine sewn but w/ hand sewn button holes) and will be complete as such. Sizes are 38", 46" & 52" but we can alter to any SMALLER size not listed. Fabric is a wool blend of 85% wool and 15% synthetic. These were privately started but will be completed by us here at the shop. If you order a pair please give the three following measurements we’ll need to complete these to your specific size:

WAIST: As measures at navel level. Can be taken while wearing a tee shirt. Please do not go by your jeans size tag!

HIPS/SEAT: As measured around the fullest part of the seat/buttocks. Can be taken while wearing jeans but please pull the tape a little snug to get the slack out of the trousers. We need this measurement to insure there’s enough room in the seat of these trousers to fit you comfortably.

LENGTH: Now on this measurement we can go by what you wear in a pair of blue jeans. It’s just the waist size on jeans that we can’t use.

Upon completion these trousers will feature hand sewn button holes, side seam main pockets, a right side SA pattern watch pocket, split rear waistband with tie/back cord, seven 3/4” paperback tin buttons on the waistband, five 1/2” paperbacked tin buttons in the fly plus rolled split cuffs. All pockets and internal facings are white cotton drill.

PLEASE NOTE: We are currently working with a bare minimum crew due to the COVID-19 situation. Prior to this we we're very busy in the shop and now with just a minimum crew working, turn-around time on sewing projects is running slower than usual. Therefore, we will need at least seven to eight weeks to be able to get to and then finish any of these trousers. Please understand that BEFORE you buy. If you have any questions about this please E-MAIL ME. Sorry, we cannot sell any of these trousers as they currently stand (only partially completed). This is by specific instructions of the owner. They are to be sold only as completed, ready-to-wear trousers.

Price below is PER PAIR.

SKY BLUE TROUSERS. #KH8992. On hand are two pair of sky blue wool trousers. One pair measures in at 33" x 30 1/2" and one pair measures 30" x 31 1/2". Both were made by Stony Brook Company many years ago and while they both have seen considerable service and show some wear, they still remain in very solid serviceable condition. NO rips, tears, repairs, etc and freshly dry cleaned before being sent in.

Both of these trousers are virtually identical in term of fabrics, level of wear plus overall finish and details. They both are a mix of machine sewing plus some hand sewn details. The waistband facings, pocket bags and right side fly facings are white cotton drill. The left side fly facings are brown polished cotton. Hand sewn button holes. Cuffs are separately faced and the top edges of the cuff facings have been felled by hand. Cuffs have the side seam splits and hand sewn cuff split reinforcement patches. Side seam pattern pockets and a right side watch pocket. Buttons are paperbacked tin with seven 3/4” on the waistband and four 1/2” in the fly. The split waistband has an inside reinforcement gusset plus tie-back tape (1/4” white cotton twill tape).

SCARLET RED CHASSEUR PATTERN TROUSERS. #AMS7756.. Brand new never worn scarlet red chasseur trousers made from pre-washed medium weight wool (a blend of 80% wool - 20% synthetic ). The pattern for these trousers was copied from an original pair by the SBC staff a number of years ago. 44" waist x unfinished length. We can easily alter the waist and set the length for the buyer at no extra charge (just give us some time to get the work done as we’re mega-busy in the shop right now).

These trousers are made to “Standard Grade” specifications (principally machine-sewn but with hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking) and feature a pleated waist, black stipple tin buttons (five 3/4” on the waistband and five smaller 1/2” in the fly), two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass two-tine buckle plus side seam pockets. All interior cottons are white cotton drill except for the left side fly facings which are black polished cotton. Cuffs will be rolled and hand hemmed if the buyer wishes us to set the length. Originally made by SBC.

Oh yes, concerning the suspender button count – these currently have four (4) suspender buttons (two front and two back … for the “poor boy” type suspenders). If you’d prefer, we can add two more buttons to the front giving you four in the front and two on the back. No charge, just let us know.

PHOTO NOTE: Please disregard the suspenders on these trousers. We had an identical pair of trousers on consignment recently and that pair had suspenders attached. These photos show that first pair. Our digital camera is in the shop for repairs which is why we could not shoot photos of the pair listed here (#AMS7756). The reason we used photos of that first pair in this listing is to show the pattern and details used in the pair listed (given that they’re identical to that previous pair). Of course any questions about that please E-MAIL ME.

OFFICER'S TROUSERS

SKY BLUE INFANTRY OFFICER TROUSERS. On Temporary Hold. #LB9637. Made from a medium shade of sky blue wool broadcloth. Measures in with a 39” waist x 30” length. These have been used but remain in overall excellent condition. Freshly cleaned! Two rear adjustment belts w/ a two-tine brass buckle allow these to be cinched up (drawn in) about 2” (max).

These trousers are principally machine sewn but do have hand sewn button holes and the cuff linings are felled by hand. Side seam pattern pockets w/ decorative stitching and a right side horizontal cut watch pocket. These trousers have 1/8” dark blue welting running the length of the outer seams. The waistband facings and the left side fly facings are brown cotton. The pocket bags and the right side fly facing are white cotton. The cuffs are lined in an oatmeal colored linen which is hand felled across the top edge. Just to mention it, some of the hand felling on the cuff linings can be seen on the outside of the trouser leg (see photo). There are six 3/4” bone buttons for suspenders and one 3/4” tin button for closing the fly. NOTE: All the waistband buttons are on the INSIDE of the waistband, not out the outside. This was a common feature of many tailored trousers of the era. Rounding out these trousers is a medium green (like a lima bean green) cotton twill tape binding around the top edge of the waistband, plus shaped cuffs – slightly scalloped over the toe and slightly lower by the heel. Here again, a common feature on tailored trousers of the era. Made by Joe Blunt.

DARK BLUE INFANTRY OFFICER TROUSERS. #LB5209. Made from a lightweight dark blue wool flannel and have been to the field. However, they remain in solid condition. Just has a small patch (about the size of a quarter) on the right leg at the knee and a tiny pin hole on the left leg at the knee. Freshly cleaned! Measures in with a 40” waist x 30” length. Two rear adjustment belts w/ buckle allow these to be cinched up a couple inches for a smaller waist size if needed (about 2” max I would say).

These trousers have machine sewn main seams but do have a good amount of hand finishing inside. Button holes are hand sewn. Side seam pattern pockets w/ 1/8” medium sky blue piping running the length of the outer seams. All internal facings plus the pocket bags are brown polished cotton. The cuffs are split on the outside approx. 6" in length up from the bottom. This is most likely to allow for easier wear with boots. The cuffs are lined in brown polished cotton and these linings are 12” in length (tall). There are six 5/8” pewter buttons in the fly with six 3/4” paperbacked tin buttons on the INSIDE of the waistband for attaching the suspenders. The 7/8” button closing the waistband in front is a black material (could be horn / could be synthetic) and is replacement. Maker Unknown.

ENLISTED MAN'S TROUSERS

C.S GRAY WOOL TROUSERS. #LB7412. These heavyweight gray (very dark gray w/ a hint of of blue) wool trousers have been used but remain in good solid condition. A tiny bit of the wool nap is worn off on the knees and there are some seam repairs along the bottom edge of the pocket bags (more on that below). Freshly cleaned but some stains do remain on the inside cotton facings.

These trousers measure in with a 42” waist (rear adjustment belts let all the way out) w/ a 27” unfinished length. Machine sewn main seams but w/ LOTS of hand sewn finishing. Hand top stitching on the right side fly panels, around the top entry (“mule ear”) pockets and around the two rear adjustment belts (w/ black enameled two-tine buckle). Just to mention it there is some zig-zag machine stitching inside the pockets holding the pocket facings place. With a little time and patience you may be able to pick out that zig-zag stitching and replace it with hand stitching to keep in tune with all the other great hand sewn details these trousers have (just sayin’). The pocket bags, internal facings and upper back panel lining are made from a heavy unbleached cotton (looks like a “soft” weave cotton duck). The four waistband suspender buttons are 3/4” natural bone. The button for closing the front of the waistband is 3/4” black tin as are the four buttons in the fly.

Finally, we wish to point out that some fraying around the bottom of the pocket bags had reached the machine stitching that closes the bottom of the bags. However, the owner sewed in a new line of hand stitching a little higher up above the original seam line. Nice work and does a nice job securing the bottom of the pocket bags. We’ll have a photo of this. Maker unknown.

PHOTO NOTES:   The trousers in the photos are coming out a LOT lighter gray than they actually are. This is due to the bright lights and the camera flash as these trousers are in fact a DARK charcoal gray (free samples available if you'd like to see the fabric in hand). Also, the trousers in the photos shows bone buttons. These were added by special request of the customer as these trousers usually come with black stipple faced tin buttons.

DARK BLUE WOOL TROUSERS. Sale Pending #LB1991. Privately made and measures in at 40"/42" Waist x 33" Unfinished Length. These trousers have been worn but remain in excellent physical condition (no rips, tears, repairs, etc). They do have some tiny light stains on the inside muslin pieces (facings and pockets) but absolutely minor. Entirely machine sewn except for hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking. Side seam pattern pockets. No watch pocket and no adjustment in the back (no belts or tie-cord). Paperback tin buttons on the waistband and in the fly. The seller indicates the general pattern of these trousers are based on a pair of C.S. Sanitation Commission trousers in the Museum Of The Confederacy.

The buttoning fly is a little unique as the panel where the button holes only has button holes on the facing (back) side. Thus when the fly is buttoned, the buttons themselves are actually inside the fly panel in-between the rear facing and the wool front piece. Hence you do not see the fly buttons when the fly is buttoned closed.
