C.S. BLACK LEATHER CAP BOX. #SH8734. This black leather cap box and been used but remains in solid serviceable condition. The front closing tab has some reinforcing leather added to the back side to give it some additional support - especially around the finial hole (see photos). No inside fleece and no cone pick. Appears to be a modified 1850 pattern Watervielt Arsenal ("arrow front") cap box. The two rear belt loops have been removed (but the rivets remain) and replaced w/ a single wide belt loop that has been riveted on. This modification was privately done but not a bad job. Some portions of this cap box have been redyed black. No stamps. Looks like the cap box (before modification) was an imported item.

REMINGTON ("Zouave") SABER BAYONET SCABBARD: #SH2565. Has heavy surface cracking on the 20 3/4” long black leather scabbard but it is still serviceable enough for a couple more season in the field. Could be stripped for the brass pieces and rebuilt (just a thought). Has a brass throat and tip plus a brass lug for attaching the scabbard to the frog. These brass elements need to be cleaned up w/ a little Brasso and steel wool - especially the throat. However, they are intact (but just need cleaning). The frog itself has some creasing in the leather and some light scratches but all stitching is tight. Total length (tip to tip) counting the frog is 25 1/2”. Scabbard and frog are black bridle leather. Has been in storage a while and could definitely benefit by the application of some leather treatment. No stamps or marks. Maker unknown.

ENFIELD BAYONET FROG w/ BUCKLE & STRAP. #SH8837. This black leather Enfield bayonet frog has seen a lot of service and has its fair share of scrapes, dings and rubs plus there are some stitches coming apart on the scabbard itself. However, it is still serviceable enough for at least another season or two. The strap & roller buckle are in very good physical condition (buckle could use a little cleaning). This frog has been in storage a while so it definitely could benefit from a little leather oil or preservative. Made from a heavy leather and principally riveted but does have some stitching. There is a rivet missing on the center front of the frog. However, this does not appear to affect the serviceability of this frog. This item was privately made in Texas. Maker’s mark with a “star” at the top but we cannot make it out the surrounding print. The seller is also throwing in a very well used Enfield brass bayonet scabbard tip (well used but still straight and solid) that can be used to replace a missing tip.

NAVAL CUTLASS SCABBARD FROG: #BC1652. Maker unknown on this 1860/61 Naval cutlass scabbard but undoubtedly an import. Owner has an Enfield bayonet and scabbard installed for a few hours but them removed it. Other than for that this item has never really been used - and certainly never to the field. Black leather with black stitching. Measures 10” long x 3 3/4” at the widest part. No stamps or marks.

U.S. -or- C.S. BLACK LEATHER BELT; NO PLATE. #GW3437. This black leather belt measures in at 1 3/4” wide, has a working length of between 34" to 37" depending on the type of waist plate used. This is a modern belt (meaning not one made specifically as a repro for Civil War reenacting). Still, it’s a wide flat black leather belt and in that regard works just fine. This belt has been service in both a U.S. and well as a C.S. application based on the two styles of adjustment holes present - single row & double row. For U.S. or C.S. OVAL STYLE PLATES this belt – once a plate has been attached – has a maximum (outward) working length of right around 34” based on the SINGLE adjustment holes. For A GEORGIA FRAME style buckle the maximum (outward) working length - once a plate has been attached - is right around 37” using the double row of holes. Need to mention that the two points or tines of the Georgia Frame have to have a 13/16" center-to-center measurement (some GA frames vary slightly on this) to match the holes punched in this belt (which have a 13/16" center-to-center measurement). Finally, there is a leather retainer loop from this belts “modern” service” still present. However, it can be removed if desired.

BUFF SABER BELT w/ CIRCULAR U.S. PLATE. #JM1550. Custom made by Dell’s Leatherworks this 1 5/8” wide Dragoon style buff leather saber belt can be used in an early war CS. impression as well. The plate can be changed of course but that would be the job for someone with leather sewing tools and skills. But as it is with the circular US plate, it can work for US or CS early war.
This saber belt was used a few times then went into storage and has remained there for a while. The brass pieces have a patina from age but should polish up nicely (if you’re so inclined) with a little time spent on the job. This belt measures in with a 49” waist (counting the plate). There is only one hole in the belt for the adjustment hook (given that this belt was custom made and fitted to the current owner). However, more holes can be punched in (by the new owner) for a wide range of adjustment. The sabers hangers are adjustable via brass center bar buckles but there are no snap swivels on the ends (probably came that way by design). There is no “over-the-shoulder” (Sam Browne) strap (again, probably by design).

C.S. WHITE LEATHER SABER BELT. #LB4200. C.S. white leather saber belt w/ a lightweight rectangular tin buckle (w/ a soldered 3-hook attachment adjustment in back) plus tin hardware. NO adjustment holes are present and need to be punched in. This belt was probably much longer when new and the end w/ the adjustment holes cut off. Current maximum working length w/ new holes added would be 42" by our best estimate. This belt has been used and has some dirt marks on the leather. There are also some light dings / scratches on the tin buckle and metal hardware. However, this belt remains in overall very solid serviceable condition. As indicated above, this belt currently does not have any adjustment holes and the buyer would have to punch them in. Maker unknown.

WHITE COTTON DUCK HAVERSACK. #BC8724. Made from a white cotton drill this entirely hand sewn haversack has seen service and has some stains and marks on it. However, the bag remains in overall solid serviceable condition. There is a 3/4” bone button on the body and a hand sewn button hole on the cover for closing. The edges of the cover and top edge of the bag are rolled & hand hemmed but the inside bag seams are raw with some edge fraying taking place. No inner bag. The 1/ 1/4” wide cotton drill carrying strap is 43” long and an 8” long portion of that on one end is a homemade addition. This addition can be removed and the end of the original strap resewn to the bag thus shortening the strap to 35” (which was probably its original length). U.S. CANTEEN w/ CAVALRY STRAP. #SH8627. We usually do not carry canteens with rust issues (major or even minor) but the arrangement to carry this canteen was made before that policy took effect, Hence we have this listing. So what we have here is a sky blue wool covered U.S. 1858 pattern “smoothside” canteen w/ a black leather cavalry strap w/ black painted saddle ring clip or snap hook end. This canteen has been used and has some stains on the wool cover plus some pretty good rust on the three tin loops around the side. There is also some light rust on the inside. The seller indicated that this was sold as a stainless steel canteen (not counting the tin loops) but given there are a couple small spots of rust inside along the body seams, we're not sure what to make of that. This canteen has seen its fair share of service and in addition to the rust mentioned there is a small shallow dent on one side. We filled this canteen with water for a 48 hour period but observed no leaks. However, there was a very slight tinge to the water when we emptied it from the small rust spots inside. Meantime, the cork element is attached to the canteen via a steel jack chain. Maker unknown.

SHELTER TENT. #BC1766. Maker unknown on this dog tent (both halves) but originally purchased on sutler row. Made from a stout cotton duck - off-white w/ light brown speckles in the weave. This shelter tent has seen service but remains in very solid physical condition (no rips, rear, repairs, loose grommets, distorted button holes. missing buttons, etc.). It does have some mud spots here and there (very minor) and some black speckling from having been damp then stored (here again, not bad overall) A soap and water scrubbing should clean this tent up nicely (for what little there is to clean :-).
This tent is entirely machine sewn including button holes. Buttons are pewter and there are large size grommets (along the bottom edge). There are leather ties (see photos when posted) in each grommet for securing to stakes. Speaking of stakes there are eight hand-hewn wooden stakes made from branches plus one “Y” piece cut from a limb fork (real field expedient stuff). Accompanying this tent is a 170” long piece of hemp rope.
Each half measure 65” long x 61" high. Each half is a two-piece item with a vertical seam in the center. We do not know if this tent has water proof and/or fire retardant capacity. Always best to assume not. If I can add my unsolicited 2 cents here, if adding waterproofing make plenty sure what you’re brushing or spraying on to your tent is non-flammable . Some waterproofing products are petroleum based.
This tent will ship US Postal Service “Retail Ground” to keep the shipping fee down.

JULIUS JONES U.S. ISSUE BLANKET. On Temporary Hold #BT8766. By Matt Woodburn. Has been used a few times but remains in great condition! No rips, tears, repairs, stains, etc. Clean and without any camp odors (smoke, powder, hay, etc) etc. Does have a light smell of natural wool yarn that accompanies new blankets of this type (meaning those made from authentic correct yarn). Does not have the “U.S.” stitching in the center. As we have found out, the stitched "US" in the original Jones blanket was no longer intact so the blanket was reproduced without the stitched "US" . Of course, if the new owner wishes to add it, that’s perfectly fine and historically correct. The cut (or raw) edges can very easily be trimmed a little and/or just rolled over and hand hemmed down to prevent fraying.

It also has one hole about the size of a nickel (which can be patched) and right next to that two small holes about 1/8” in diameter (which can be darned. We’ll have photos of this. STRIPED TWO-PANEL CIVILIAN BLANKET. #BT5652. While this is a civilian style blanket, we have posted it here (in the military section) because it can easily see service in any military impression (especially C.S.) as well as civilian. The narrow width woven stripes on this blanket are multi-colored - dark brown, red, dark blue & tan. The weave is wool (the color elements) over tan cotton. This blanket was purchased from an antique shop and is a rather old item. However, the exact age is unknown. Measures right around 67" wide x 70" long and weighs approx. 3 pounds. Has a circular patched hole measuring approximately 1 3/4 “ in diameter (about the size of a silver dollar). Also has an unrepaired hole about 2” x 2” and a small area of damage along one edge approximately 3” long and about 1” deep ("deep" meaning in from the edge into the blanket. There is a 1 3/4” long section of the center seam where the two halves are sewn together that needs to be re-stitched. The long edges of this blanklet are raw and would definitely benefit from being hemmed to prevent fraying. We’ll have photos for all this. Finally, there are a number of tiny holes in the blanket (most likely from age and use) but most of these are not immediately visible unless you hold the blanket up to the light. So while not a major issue, they are there so we have to mention it. All in all a real home spun looking blanket - and it probably is.

"EMERGENCY" WOOL BLANKET. #BC1302. Used just a couple times and remains in great condition. Light brown wool with dark brown stripes. Measures approximately 86” long x 62” wide. Selvaged long edges but raw where cut from the bolt at the mill. No “U.S.” embroidery in the blanket center since it’s an “emergency” blanket and these (historically) came from a variety of sources. Weighs about 3 1/2 pounds.

PRICE REDUCED WHITE WOOL BLANKET; #LB9694. Maker unknown on this 96" x 94" (8' x 7'10") white wool blanket. This item has been used but remains in excellent physical condition! Has a few very small stains (about the size of a quarter) near the center, a slightly larger stain (about 3" in diameter) and there is some pale yellowing in spots from age. However, NO physical damage (no rips, tears, repairs, etc) and no odors (smoke, storage, etc). Weighs in right around five pounds. This blanket lived in the knapsack for a while and some of the dark stains probably came from other items stored in the pack as well.

COPPER PLATED TIN TEA POT. #BC9839. Has been used in the field but remains in good shape (no dents and no leaks – we checked). Holds a quart of water (although I wouldn’t use all that as it will percolate out of the spout when boiling). Has a cap w/ seven small holes on the end of the 2 1/4” long spout. Weighs in at 1 lb 4 oz and is 4 1/4” tall. Measures approximately 6 7/8” in diameter at the bottom tapering to 4 3/8“ in diameter at the top. Has a hinged lid and a large rolled handle. As with all tinware new or used, we very highly recommend a good HOT soapy water scrubbing. PS: I know someone's going to ask so ... yes, I can't see why you couldn't boil coffee in this as well. :-)

ENAMELWARE COOKING POT. #WN7512. Medium size (7" in diameter x 5 1/2" deep) black speckleware (enamelware) cooking pot w/ side handles. Pot includes its lid w/ steel wire bale. Has been used but remains in overall very good condition. Only blemishes we can find are three “chips” on the top of the lid (we’ll have photos of this), a little heat discoloration on the top of the wire bale, and some dulled/course surface area on the bottom of the pot from the campfire. This item is a bit out of our CW time frame (it’s more 1870's / 80's +) but it came in w/ a large lot of CW items so we'll post it. :-) As with all tinware we very highly recommend a good HOT soapy water scrubbing.

LARGE C.S.A. PROVISION SACK. Sale Pending #AM9021 One remaining of these large (22” wide x 27” tall) C.S.A cotton duck provision sacks w/ period stenciling. Brand new never used except as display items. The sacks were made by A. Martin (an A.C. approved vendor) and the stencil was made by Don Smith (Trans-Mississippi Depot). These do not have draw strings for closing. Now given that there is a small notch or split at the top of each bag where it’s hemmed (see photos), this can be folded over to make a new channel for draw strings to be added. That or you can take out the top hems and rework it for new draw strings. Either method will work (just a thought).
