SUIT SETS

BLACK CIVILIAN SUIT SET. #RE9837. This size 44 black wool fine weave wool flannel civilian suit was made by Joe Blunt (44 frock & vest, LG shirt [fits individual w/ up to a 44" chest] and 42” x 32” trousers). It is an older repro (made to 2001) and has seen a lot of service. However, it remains in solid serviceable condition. There are some physical problems here and there and these are addressed in the individual descriptions below. There are some small stains here and there and a dry cleaning should take care of most of that. The set consists of as FROCK COAT, TROUSERS, VEST, PLEATED FRONT WHITE COTTON SHIRT and a BLACK CRAVAT. There’s going to be a lot of photos so we’re going to need some time on that project. However, we do have photos of the shirt and vest posted at this time. Meantime, here are the fine details per item:

FROCK COAT: Made in a fine weave black wool flannel and features a four button single breasted front w/ a lay-down collar and lapels. The collar and lapels are heavily quilted on the underside. Buttons are 3/4” black cotton covered which started life as solid black but have taken on a more charcoal color from age. Two if the same style buttons are on the rear tails (at the waistline). These is a 3/8" hole on the left sleeve. This appears to come from a burn mark. The sleeve lining under the hole is not effected. A good tailor shop should be able to professionally patch this hole from the inside. The cuffs are plain and without buttons. The bottom skirt hem is raw. Inside we have a full length black polished cotton body lining w/ white cotton sleeve linings, padded/quilted breast panels and a horizontal cut upper left breast pocket. There is a little bit of damage in the corner of the breast pocket but can be fixed with a little needlework. There are two tail pockets in the skirt lining and the pocket insets are blue striped cotton shirting (not ticking). The skirt lining is fully hand hemmed. As a matter of fact there is a LOT of hand stitching in this frock coat! :-) Button holes are hand sewn of course. There are a couple very tiny stains on the coat (we actually missed them the first time we looked the coat over) and some sweat stains on the sleeve linings at the arm holes and at the cuffs.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this jacket will fit you satisfactorily on all points.

CHEST: 44"
SHOULDER-TO-SHOULDER: 21” (as measured shoulder to shoulder across the upper back)
SLEEVE / ARM: 27 1/2" (as measured from the outer edge of the shoulder to the cuff)
WAIST: 40" (will fit individual w/ up to a 40" waist line (as measured at navel level) comfortably)
FRONT LENGTH TO WAIST: 19" (base of collar to waistline)
FRONT LENGTH TOTAL: 39" (base of collar to front bottom hem.)
BACK LENGTH TO WAIST: 20" (base of collar (center back) to waistline)
BACK LENGTH TOTAL: 40" (base of collar (center back) to bottom hem)
ARMPIT TO ARMPIT: 25" (not an actual point of measurement in tailoring but a lot of guys ask for it)

. . . . . . (these 2 photos show the fiber damage)

TROUSERS: These trousers have seen some use but are still serviceable. They have two repairs in the crotch. Two small black wool patches have been sewn in the crotch to cover two 1 1/2” (+/-) circular holes there. There is also some light pilling in the crotch as well. Lastly, there are some stains on the pocket inserts but no physical damage.

These black wool flannel trousers are a mix of machine and hand sewing and measure in w/ a 42“ waist x 32“ length. Featured are side seam pattern pockets, a horizontal cut right side watch pocket plus two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass two tine buckle. Buttons are a mix with four small paperbacked tin in the fly and seven (one to close the waistband and six for suspender attachment) on the waistband. The waistband buttons are a gloss black material (could be black plastic). The waistband facings, right side fly facing and pocket inserts are blue striped white cotton shirting (not ticking). The upper back portion of these trousers are lined in muslin. The cuffs are rolled and hand hemmed and the inside front portion of the legs just above the cuffs is lined in a stout off-white cotton (like a heavyweight osnaburg).

VEST: This size 44” vest will fit individual with up to a 44” waistline comfortably. Single breasted rolled collar/lapel pattern made in a fine weave black wool flannel. The underside of the lapels and collar is black polished cotton. There are five small black cloth covered buttons down the vest front. Due to age these buttons have taken on a charcoal color at this point. Three vest pockets - two lower and one upper left breast. Two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass two tine buckle. A corner of the buckle frame (one side where the tines fit into) has broken off and was been repaired with a small piece of wire. Therefore, a new buckle (available at most sutlers) is very highly recommended. Inside we have a “cranberry & tan” check cotton shirting lining. The lining has two small areas that could benefit from a little needle work. One is a tiny fray that is starting near the center back. A little darning should secure that with no problem. The second is a 2” inch tear on the lining seam line at the upper left shoulder. Here again, with a little TLC and some needle work, this can be repaired. There is aslo a tiny mark on the lining - middle of the back ranging at the waistline. Not sure what may have caused that and it could also have been a blemish on the fabric when the cloth was purchase (that’s been known to happen). Finally, there are some light stains on the right side adjustment belt from where the buckle was set. There is also a very tiny hole starting on this belt as well. This vest is entirely machine sewn except for hand sewn button holes.

SHIRT: In modern shirt size this shirt will fit a 44" chest individual w/ up to an 16 1/2” to 17" neck x 41” sleeve (sleeve as measured from the center of the back of the neck, over the shoulder and down to the wrist. The cuffs are a close fit and will not fall down on the hand. So when the cuffs are buttoned any excess sleeve length will gather up on the arm. This white pleated front dress shirt is made from a fine weave high grade white cotton (Egyptian or Pima). It has some light stains on it, particularly around the collar and cuffs. Not bad and something perhaps a dry cleaning could get these out. There are a few points of physical damage on this shirt: 1: there are two small repairs (approx. 2” long) under the arms that extend out on the chest area. 2: Under the arms (in the pit area) are a couple tiny holes. 3: about a 1” length of the right cuff’s folded edge has worn through. Some small finely done stitch-work here would help prevent any further fraying, or, a seamstress can replace the cuff (or both of them if you're so inclined). While this shirt has the main seams sewn by machine, all the body and sleeve seems are rolled and hand felled - and just to mention it, there is a LOT of hand stitching in this shirt. I must say that these hand stitches are some of the most petite finely done work that I have seen; and the button holes are beyond fantastic! So this shirt was a real beauty and a text book example of superb craftsmanship in its younger day! Rounding out this shirt is a falling pattern collar, reinforced scalloped cut side seam splits, upper back (shoulder) yoke, lightly gathered sleeves & cuffs, plus small shell (looks like shell) buttons for the collar/front plaquet and the cuffs.

CRAVAT: Not sure of the maker but could be a Corner Clothiers item. Black pre-folded polished cotton with a small two-tine buckle for adjustment. Will adjust up to a 19” neck max. In great condition and probably a recent addition to this set.

BLACK WOOL DOUBLE BREASTED CIVILIAN PALETOT. #BC4862. Not sure of the maker but the patterning and assembly techniques are very close to those of South Union Mills paletots. Size 44. Worn just a couple times and remains in beautiful condition inside and out. Entirely machine sewn including button holes. Rolled collar and lapels. Evidently this coat was last used in a military application as it has 3/4” stamped brass U.S. general service eagles on the front (five per side). However, these buttons can be easily replaced (by the buyer) with black cloth covered buttons thus returning the to coat to a full civilian application. Inside we have a full length black polished cotton lining with white cotton sleeve linings. Just to mention it, when you put the coat on a little bit of the sleeve linings protrudes from the cuffs. A couple hand tacks further up the sleeve will hold this small excess in place inside the sleeves.

Here are some additional measurements. Please check these against your own respective sizes to insure this paletot will fit you satisfactorily on all points:

BROWN WOOL DOUBLE BREASTED PALETOT. Sale Pending   #BC5509. Worn just a couple times this size 44 paletot remains in great condition (!) and was freshly dry cleaned before being sent in. Made from a lightweight brown wool flannel and is entirely machine sewn including button holes. Three outside flap covered pockets (two lower and one upper left). Four 1" brown wooden buttons per side down the front. There is a fifth button hole on the upper left lapel but this would best be reserved for a boutonnière (probably the maker’s original intention). Rolled collar & lapels. Fully lined in brown polished cotton w/ the sleeves lined in fine white cotton. Just to note, the sleeve linings are a little long and have a tendency to protrude a little out of the ends of the sleeves (at the cuffs). A couple quick mid-sleeve tacks would take care of this. Cuffs are plain without buttons. There is a small plastic bag in one of the pockets with three spare wooden buttons. Speaking of the buttons, the owner removed these prior to sending the coat in for the dry cleaning. He then reattached them when he got the coat back (the dry cleaning process can crack wooden buttons). Maker Unknown.

Here are some additional measurements. PLEASE check these against your own respective sizes to insure this paletot will fit you satisfactorily on ALL points.

TROUSERS

Please measure your waist at navel level to insure you are ordering the right size. Do NOT go by modern trouser waist sizing!

>>> Also see CONFEDERATE TROUSERS on
PAGE 4.<<<

BLACK WOOL TROUSERS. #AMS9033. On hand are two pair of black wool civilian trousers which are PARTIALLY COMPLETED at this time. Given that they are only partially completed we can alter (to smaller only) these trousers to buyer’s personal sizes (we’ll contact the buyer for that info after the sale) and finish assembly at no additional charge. These trousers are being made to “Standard Grade” specifications (principally sewn but w/ hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking). Upon completion these trousers will feature side seam main pockets, a right side watch pocket, two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass buckle plus black stipple faced tin buttons – 7 on the waistband and 5 smaller in the fly. If we set the length for the buyer the cuffs will be rolled and hand hemmed. Rounding out these trousers are white cotton drill pocket inserts, white cotton drill waistband & right side fly facings plus black polished cotton left side fly facings.

PLEASE NOTE: We are VERY busy in the shop so please allow at least four (4) weeks for us to be able to get to, complete and then ship the trousers. Any questions on this please e-mail me BEFORE you buy.

Order by size: (remember, we can alter either of these trousers to any smaller size).

50” Waist
46” Waist

We had previously made a pair identical to the trousers in this listing. Here are some photos of that pair. The trousers in this listing would, of course, reflect the very same patterning and details.

PLUM COLOR CIVILIAN TROUSERS. #AMS7329. Cut from a pale plum color (we’ll get a photo up soon showing the color of this wool) lightweight wool flannel these trousers have been privately started and are partially completed at this time. Cut as a size 46 but we can alter as well as set the length for the buyer at no additional charge. Given that these trousers are a lightweight wool they will not work for field campaigning (meaning civilian trousers pressed into C.S. military service). These trousers will work in a civilian capacity where they will not encounter a lot of wear, tear and stress such as military trousers encounter in the field. As one of the crew here put it – “real ball room profilers”. Yeah, that’s pretty much right. :-)

These trousers have been started to "Standard Grade" specifications (principally machine sewn but w/ hand sewn button holes and some assorted hand tacking) and will complete as such.

Upon completion these trousers will feature side seam pockets, a right side watch pocket, black stipple tin buttons, hand sewn button holes, two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass two-tine buckle and will have rolled hand hemmed cuffs. The pockets, waistband facings and right side fly facings are white cotton drill. The left side fly facings are black polished cotton. Oh yes, the seller indicated that this wool was pre-washed prior to patterning and cutting. That should take care of any shrinkage but of course, that doesn’t mean you can throw them in the washing machine at any future point. :-) Even pre-shrunk woolens remain “dry clean only”.

DELIVERY: We’re very busy in the shop so please allow at least five (5) weeks for us to be able to get to and then complete these trousers. Any questions on this please e-mail me BEFORE you buy.

Upon completion these trousers will feature side seam pattern pockets, a right side watch pocket, two rear adjustment belts w/ a brass two-tine buckle, white cotton drill pockets & waistband facings, brown polished cotton left side fly facings, rolled hand hemmed cuffs plus black stipple faced tin buttons. Made from a lightweight dark blue wool flannel and features a six-piece body w/ a separate side band. Has a six point star made from the same fabric as the cap sewn to the top, The visor is a natural color leather in a crescent cut. This cap is unlined. Maker unknown. SHOES

PRICE REDUCED  CANVAS & LEATHER CIVILIAN SHOES. #BC8821 These size 9 1/2 lace-up brown leather w/ white canvas sides pattern shoes have seen some use. The canvas elements have discoloration and the leather pieces have some wrinkles, scuffs and dings (all the usual stuff). The soles and heels show wear but nothing broken and no holes developing. All stitches are tight. With some TLC such as shoe polish or leather oil/leather cream to soften up and revive the leather, and some "Sneaker White" on the canvas pieces (to whiten them up again) these shoes could put in a decent appearance. No heel plates. All machine sewn.

Here are a couple additional measurements:

SOLE LENGTH (heel to toe) - 11" (this is just sole length, not shoe size)
USEABLE WIDTH - 4" (this the widest part of the shoe). If the widest part of your foot (with sock) measures 4" wide you should be good to go. Any
bigger though would be too tight a fit to be comfortable.

Sorry, it will not be a big one as the seller does not want me to be cutting too much into the fabric. However, the piece will be big enough to see the color. HARRIET'S TCS PATTERNS

#1: JACKET PATTERN:   Going by the text accompanying this pattern, it will make your BASIC OFFICER or ENLISTED MAN'S SHORT JACKET, as well as an ARTILLERY/CAVALRY MOUNTED SERVICES ("shell") JACKET and also a "BUMMER JACKET" (as printed which is just your basic roundabout style jacket). One of the breast pattern pieces references "frock coat" but given that the breast patterns for the above jackets as well as frock coats are almost identical the pattern maker simply copied a pre-existing frock coat breast pattern piece to go with this short jacket pattern. If you're handy with a tape measure and tailoring chalk you could probably draw out a skirt piece and use this pattern to make a basic frock coat as well.

#2: WOMAN’S BALLGOWN (Early - Mid 1860's). Sizes 20-22-24. Uncut; with instructions

PRICE IS PER EACH INDIVIDUAL PATTERN:
